TMR Privileged to Be at WPC8

WPC8 took place in Colorado Springs

THE ANNUAL WHITE PRIVILEGE CONFERENCE, ENTERING ITS EIGHTH YEAR, WAS A FIRST FOR THE MINORITY REPORTER

BIn Colorado, the strongest revelation was probably one that in retrospect appears exceedingly obvious and ironic: that Whites, not minorities, represent The Minority Reporter’s largest audience demographic waiting to be appropriately tapped.

While we routinely have received feedback from minority audience members about the cathartic effect of our presentation due to a traditional lack of sources that treat in any serious detail minority depictions in mainstream movies, at WPC8 we saw an equally powerful process underway with our majority White audiences.

While we were certainly prepared to handle irritated questioning from devout skeptics, what we found instead was a profound curiosity to absorb as much information as possible about how common Hollywood racial patterns were simply hidden in “plain view.”

The epiphany from this event was that The Minority Reporter would unfairly limit its audience if it were to target mostly minorities for its message, for members of the majority White audience who personally participate in The Minority Reporter experience ironically stand to learn the most in learning to recognize continued patterns of minority marginalization and White glamorization.
